Roger Q Mason’s CALIFORNIA STORY directed by Michael Alvarez
Thank you to all of our community members who came out and supported this epic play. We are deeply grateful to our partners at LA City College’s Theatre Academy who gave us a place and resources to put on the production in all its planned design glory when our space was not ready in time for this production. LACC’s faculty and students were an incredible boon to the show. We could not have done it without you!
And to our incredible creative and production team and the amazing cast and crew, thank you for all of the heart and talent and sweat you put into this gorgeous show. We are honored to have played with you and are beyond grateful for your talents. May the eagle always answer back when you shout out to it!
Thank you, Roger Q Mason, for entrusting Outside In with this incredible story. Your work throughout the development process – starting with dramaturgical talks in 2021 and then a full workshop in June 2023 – was exemplary of the kind of development work Outside In is made for.
Zakiya Urbi Young’s SUBURBAN BLACK GIRL
This show also closed this past month and we want to give thanks and kudos to Zakiya and her fantastic creative and production team and producer Laurie Bernhard of SPARK Theatrical. We were so happy to host this meaningful solo performance in our ArtBox space.
Thank you to our community for coming out and experiencing Zakiya’s talents and perspective. Hit the button to keep your eye on her YouTube page for upcoming shows and appearances.

Dearest Reader,
You are cordially invited to join us for an entirely improvised play in the style of Jane Austen – at Outside In Theatre.

“From language to mannerisms, this is a glorious celebration of Austen’s writing.”
“If you enjoy improvisation and Austen, this is the show for you.”

THE INCUBATOR
1st, 3rd, 5th Sundays at 7:30pm
Do you have an idea that is still under construction? The Incubator is the space to test it out in front of a supportive audience!
We’re looking for a variety of ideas that are driven by an interesting concept. That means it does not need to be specifically comedy nor does it need to be strictly improv. So bring out your movement pieces, sketches, scripted scenes, digital shorts, music, and everything in-between!
If you don’t have an idea but want to be a part of the Incubator as an individual or a group, please sign-up to be to be a part of the Improv R&D Team, an improv set where we will give you the format/performance-concept right before the show starts. It’s max experimentation and max fun!
The Incubator is the perfect show to come watch as well. We’re looking to create a space to experiment, inspire, and be inspired. So even if you don’t have an idea yet, please come out and support your fellow performers!

THE FROGS
Season 1 Finale is live. No, we really mean it was LIVE!! And IN PERSON!!
To celebrate Season 1 and all the fantastic, inspiring and deep conversations Tobie Windham and Alex Ubokudom have been having with folks this season, we threw a The Frogs LIVE show in Outside In’s ArtBox. With special guests: Jana Naomi Smith, creator of Red for Revolution, she’s a writer, director, and cultural conjurer, with Caro Guzmán, an actor, storyteller, joined Jana to perform scenes from Red for Revolution.
Then we had Roger Q. Mason, Obie-nominated playwright of Lavender Men and creator of the Califa’s Trilogy – which includes CALIFORNIA STORY currently being produced by Outside In Theatre. And in the in between we were silkily serenaded by the extraordinary R&B singer & songwriter Ave.Noelle. It was an amazing night of community and celebration. Now you can listen and celebrate too on your favorite podcast platforms.
We can’t wait to see who steps up to the mic on the lily pad with The Frogs in Season 2!
