About

Breathe., written and performed by Philicia Saunders (Black is King, The Rise of Skywalker), is a form of art activism fusing live performance, cinema, performance art and artistic swimming in a hybridized narrative that could only be born during these challenging, yet galvanizing times.

With the recent political, racial, and global unrest occurring throughout 2020, Philicia wrote and stars in this one-woman live theater show based on her life-changing personal journey towards activism after a chance trip to a Civil Rights monument, and mentorship by a luminary of activism, Sweet Alice Harris – one of Watts, CA’s most beloved community organizers.

Relevant to what’s happening today, Breathe. is sure to spark discussion and action among viewers everywhere. It’s about taking action! As Philicia learned from Sweet Alice: “You can’t just be silent and stand in one place.”

QUOTES

From Philicia Saunders, writer/performer

“As a writer/producer/actor on my first solo show, BREATHE, I couldn’t have been in better hands. Jessica Hanna and Paul Hungerford were excellent to work with – I felt very supported in bringing my story to life every step of the way. Their expertise shined through from pre-production planning to rehearsals to showtime – especially during a pandemic. I will cherish my experience with them and take what I have learned with me onto my future solo shows. I am forever grateful!”

From Roger Q. Mason, director

“Outside In Theatre is innovating the way we create, produce, and share narrative content for the stage.  Two of its helmers Jessica Hanna and Paul Hungerford guided me through the labyrinth of streaming theatre on my first digital project BREATHE, and the result was an educational, inspirational, and entirely fulfilling experience I’ll never forget.”
