BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

Before It's Too Late Poster
Graphic Design by Dik Pose

Created & Performed by Christopher Moncayo-Torres
Guest Starring Christopher’s Parents – Nancy Moncayo & Abel Torres
Directed by Bernardo Cubria

A clock counts down as Christopher Moncayo-Torres, a habitually late Ecuadorian-American live-storyteller, rushes to make up for lost time with his born and bred Ecuadorian parents, Nancy Moncayo and Abel Torres in this heartfelt, comedic solo-ish show. Abel, his once estranged, 82-year–old father, will fly in from Queens, NY, and Nancy, his 78-year-old mother, will video call in from her home in Ecuador.

Making their performance debut as a duo (yes, really), Abel and Nancy will co-parent Christopher for the first time and unpack their complex relationship throughout this epic evening of attempted belated bonding despite their language barrier- Christopher only knows so much Spanish, his parents only know so much English. This recovering no sabo kid ( a Latino or Hispanic individual living in the U.S. who does not speak Spanish well or at all) from Queens will need your support as Christopher juggles translations, true stories, a pair of backup moms (his eldest sisters, Natalie & Catherine might make a cameo) while actually preparing delicious Ecuadorian food from his mother’s recipe book.

Despite the cultural, geographical and linguistic chasms between them, can these two aging immigrant parents and their child experience forgiveness, empathy and generational joy while actually understanding one another before time runs out?

BITL: Nancy and Abel
2003, the only photo taken by Christopher (age 17) of his parents together

The idea of having his parents on stage was a fortunate accident that dates back to 2017 when Christopher performed a traditional solo show in NYC about his estranged relationship with Abel. Throughout the show, Abel incidentally became a part of the performance as he sat in the front row being himself, interrupting Christopher’s performance throughout – audience members loved seeing their dynamic unfold right in front of them.

Fast forward to the 2024 Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles. Christopher and Abel premiered a show they co-created focused solely on their relationship called “No Sabo” (formerly “Habla y te Salvas: True Stories of a No Sabo Kid from Queens & his Guayaco Dad”). They were Hollywood Fringe Scholarship recipients, nominated for Top of Fringe and the Adelaide Fringe Exchange Award, as well as winners of the Best Two Person Show award, Eastwood Independent Theatre Award (Best of Venue) and Denver Fringe Festival Exchange Award. While navigating different language proficiencies and Abel’s first time ever being on stage, much of that show was built in real time as they performed it during both the festival and its extended run. Relying on traditional live-storytelling, improvisation and Christopher asking for translation support from the audience, the show found its footing.

Since “No Sabo”, Christopher has been developing a show with his mother for two years, recording interviews via video calls, translating imperfectly, traveling across hemispheres to Nancy’s new residence in Ecuador and stumbling through messy cooking lessons together. Christopher will try to follow her recipe in a language he struggles with, while also exploring if him and his mother can understand one another despite the physical and emotional barriers.

With Bernardo Cubría as his creative partner and supportive director, Before It’s Too Late will be the epic, fun and unpredictable show Christopher has been dreaming of crafting for you and his parents, making this a family outing you won’t want to miss!

Christopher Moncayo-Torres
Creator & Performer

Christopher Moncayo-Torres is an award-winning Ecuadorian-American writer, performer & live storyteller, born and bred in Queens, NY, new-ish to living in LA. He’s also a storytelling instructor and host for The Moth, a global nonprofit dedicated to the art and craft of live storytelling. He’s also been featured on The Moth Radio Hour. He’s led multiple storytelling workshops across the country working with several communities from high schoolers and college students to veterans and people currently incarcerated. He is the co-founder and Managing Director of Fail Better Arts, a BIPOC centered community of multi-disciplinary art-makers who bravely experiment together with their unfinished, messes-in-progress through low cost workshops. He currently hosts the monthly storytelling-workshop show, Fail Better Story Time. More info can be found at www.failbetterarts.com. He’s currently serving on the Hollywood Fringe Festival Access Advisory Board & Scholarship Deliberation Committee. Christopher is also incredibly grateful to the supportive and attentive team at Outside In Theatre, especially to Jessica Hanna and her generous guidance throughout. Without their faith in this show, he’d never have this unique opportunity to be witnessed alongside his parents in the silliest and most cathartic way he’s able to imagine for you. And a very special thank you to his director, Bernardo Cubría, for the support throughout the writing experience and his encouragement for Christopher to clown around a bit. Christopher’s excited for you to meet his parents! And they’re excited (and nervous) to meet you! Oh, and he hopes you enjoy his mom’s cooking.

Nancy Moncayo
Guest Star

Nancy Moncayo (with commentary by Christopher, approved by Nancy): Born and bred in Guayaquil, Ecuador (making her “costeña” which means someone in Ecuador who is from the coast). The middle child, and only daughter, to Rosa América Villagran Mera & Victor Hugo Moncayo Martínez (que Descansen en Paz/ may they Rest in Peace). She was also raised by her grandmother Leonor Martinez. In 1968, at 19 years old, she immigrated to New York City. She eventually had children of her own with an Ecuadorian man she knew off and on since childhood- Abel Torres (her former husband and current co-star). Nancy became a proud, hardworking single mother (of maybe too many kids), feeding her children delicious Ecuadorian meals such as seco de pollo (chicken stew cooked slowly in a thick sauce of beer) sango de camaron (creamy stew made of shrimp, green plantains and peanut butter) encebollado (a rich fish soup) and, of course, Llapingachos (stuffed, pan-fried potato cakes). She looks forward to co-preparing one of these with Christopher for the audience. After 57 years in the United States, in 2025, Nancy moved back to Ecuador. Now 78 years old, she is living out her retirement days in the coastal city of Salinas, Ecuador (the westernmost city on mainland Ecuador- not the easiest to get to, let me tell ya!) Nancy spends her current (hermit-like) days window shopping at the local mall, strolling down the beach and vibrant Malecon de Salinas (the Salinas Boardwalk) and Netflixing the evening away (she’s recently discovered “binging”). When asked how she feels about making her performance debut in this new show with Christopher and Abel, she said: “Ehh…bien…y un poco nerviosa… de conversar de nuestro historia. Pero quiero ayudarte con esto” (ehh… fine… and a little nervous…to talk about our story. But I wanna help you with this).

Abel Torres
Guest Star

Abel Torres (with commentary by Christopher, not approved by Abel): Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. His fondest memories growing up are in Alausí, a historic Andean town in the Chimborazo Province, where his father was a train conductor. The eldest son of Carlos Torres and Magdalena Zúñiga (que Descansen en Paz/ may they Rest in Peace). Abel served in the Ecuadorian Navy as a young man where he was often late reporting back to base. In 1969, at the age of 24, he immigrated to New York City. He quickly became a hardworking entrepreneur and eventually the father of several kids (we’re not quite sure how many) across 3 different families (that we know of). One of those families was created with someone he knew off and on back in Ecuador since childhood- Nancy Moncayo (his former wife and current co-star). At 80 years old, Abel made his acting debut (yes, really) at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2024 by performing alongside his son, Christopher, in “No Sabo”- an award-winning, solo-ish show about rekindling their once estranged relationship, despite their language barrier.  As a result, Abel is now a multi-award winning actor and likes to constantly remind Christopher of this (somewhat endearing) fact. He has had fun touring the show across the country. Abel currently lives in Queens, NY and is excited to make his return to the LA theatre scene (especially after asking to be paid to do so). When asked what he expects from being in this new show with both Christopher and Nancy, he said: “Espero que el show sea un exito. Y quiero decir que estoy muy orgulloso de ti. Estás progresando. Sigan adelante!” (I hope the show is a success. And I want to say that I am very proud of you. You’re making progress. Keep going!)
